Profit Building Tools
One of the simplest profit building tools is regular profitable contact with your existing customers. And a monthly newsletter is the best; but you can’t just do any kind of newsletter. The newsletter that works the best has some key characteristics. Here they are:
- It’s not about auto repair- the quickest way to lose your customer’s interest is to talk about auto repair. They don’t care until their car is broken. You might sprinkle a tip or two in, but no long articles on auto repair.
- It must be fun and entertaining- short one-three paragraph long pieces that are interesting, easy to read and fun. These should be the heart and soul of the newsletter. People remember fun entertaining stuff. Your goal is to be remembered.
- Name names- work the names of your best clients into the newsletter. Have a client of the month every month and feature them in a positive light. Again, only one-three paragraphs. It doesn’t have to be long; it just has to put their name “in lights”.
- Have a contest- every month there should be a trivia question or some other direct response mechanism in the newsletter. This will generate phone calls into your shop. This does two things; one it shows you that the newsletter got delivered and it’s working, and two it gives you an opportunity to talk to your best customers and give them a reason to come into the shop and spend money.
- Finally, it must go out every month like clockwork- it doesn’t work if you send it out every couple of months or once a quarter. That just isn’t frequent enough. Think about the people you did business with 90 days ago. Do you remember who they were? Do you remember anything significant about them? Probably not unless they’ve followed up with you. You must become a “habit” for your best customers.
These are some of the key characteristics of an effective profit building newsletter. Now, if you’re the typical shop owner you’re probably saying, “Ok Dave, I agree with you. This sounds like a good idea, certainly worth trying, but with all of my other responsibilities how am I going to get it done?”
I’m glad you asked. There are two ways to accomplish this. First, you could go through the process each month of collecting articles off the internet (be careful not to violate any copyrights). Then you could lay it all out in a program like Microsoft Publisher. Once you’ve done that, all you have to do is shop around for a printer, get it all printed and then take it to the Post Office for delivery… Sounds like a lot of work doesn’t it? Yeah, it is and your time is way too valuable for that. Would you like the shortcut?
